DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST
It is the middle of our summer and our community is filled with visitors and the driving ease has also taken a vacation. Activities and services, however, have not diminished and we would like to point out some new events and happenings that are close by on the horizon. On Monday afternoon, August 4, 2003 two staff members from the Vietnam Veterans' Information Center in Hyannis will be here at the Center to inform any veteran or veteran survivor on any and all benefits that they are entitled to because of their military service. On Monday afternoon, August 18, 2003, Attorney Joseph Sattler, Jr. will return to the Center to conclude his seminar concerning Medicare and Medicaid which he began earlier this year. On Thursday, August 21, 2003, Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston who have offices in Yarmouth and Sandwich is sending two technicians to our Center to offer free vision and glaucoma screenings to our seniors - it will be offered at the same time as blood pressure screenings from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. On Monday, August 25, 2003, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mass. in cooperation with the Northeast affiliate of the American Heart Association will be presenting a program called "Save a Life, Fighting Heart Disease and Stroke Through Community Education" at 1:30 p.m. After the program a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Rep. will be present to answer Medicare/Medex questions. We also are very proud to say that the Senior Center's exercise schedule has been filled as far as classes. Some openings are available. Every weekday morning from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. is filled with either osteo exercise, strength training, Yoga or Tai Chi. We want to thank all the instructors and especially the participants. As far as trips are concerned, there are some interesting and informative as well as entertaining ones on the up-coming agenda.
We would also like to remind our seniors about some other happenings here at your Senior Center. On Wednesday, September 3, 2003, we'll be hosting, with the help of our Council on Aging members, our Annual Cookout. If you are planning on attending, we would ask you to call the Center. Also on Monday, September 29, 2003, Derek Mann will return to enlighten and entertain us with his presentation on "London." We hope you all enjoy a restful, relaxing and peaceful month. VAN GO CHATTERWe hope all our seniors who ride our "Van Go" are understanding that during the summer months when our population rises so much and the number of vehicles doubles to make travel much more difficult and obviously slower, our van therefore, cannot be always as prompt and "on time" as it can during the off-season. Remember our purpose and our custom that medical appointments are our number 1 priority and shopping trips are always after noontime. Thank you for calling to schedule ahead. OUTREACH REPORT - PRESCRIPTION ADVANTAGE 2003A reminder that the Prescription Advantage Program that had stopped taking applications will re-open for new applicants on Friday, August 1, 2003. Applications are available at the Senior Center. WANTED: A SENIOR TO LEND A HELPING HANDMr. Richard Waltz has been our webmaster since our entrance onto the Internet. He is now hoping that some Senior who is interested in lending him a hand will come forward. If you have an interest in assisting our webmaster please give John a call at the Center or stop in and let him know. Thanks, in advance. Phone 508-540-0196 A reminder to all that there are no birthday parties for the months of July or August. REPRESENTATIVE MATT PATRICK AT CENTEROn Friday August 29, 2003, State Rep. Matthew Patrick will be available to Falmouth seniors to discuss what interests you - his constituents. Representative Patrick will be here the last Friday of every month at 2:00 p.m. Make it a point to stop in. JUNE/JULY BIRTHDAY PARTYOnly about 20 seniors came to our last birthday party honoring those whose birth dates are observed in June or July. Mr. Kevin Murphy, our newly elected Selectman and Mr. Michael Palmer, our newly elected Town Clerk introduced themselves to those in attendance and they were very well received by all present. The Center Singers under the direction of John Murphy and accompanied at the piano by Jean Hebden then entertained the participants with a variety of tunes which were known and appreciated by all. After the songs, cards and prizes were awarded to celebrants and guests. The prizes were donated by: Nice’n Natural Hair Salon, Johnny’s Tune and Lube, Dee Engley Massage, and Shuckers Restaurant. Those celebrating their special days were: Rachel Mooney, Carol Collins, Elaine Sullivan, Agnes Hoar, Marion Fotiades, Irene Leal, June Murphy, Edith Rigoli, Jean Halloran, Leonard Hubbard and Mary Leavens. BIRTHDAY PARTY? YES OR NO!For the last year or so, I am sure that any senior who has attended one of our birthday parties has been somewhat shocked at the number of seniors attending. Most times the Center Singers out-number the guests. The question has to be asked if all the effort expended by the Center Singers, the hostesses, the Council on Aging and others who volunteer to make the party a happy affair, is it all worth the effort? A discussion has been held and the decision has been tentatively made that depending on the attendance at the September party, more birthday parties will be held at later dates. In other words we all have to show up or we will ship the birthday parties out. What will your decision be?? FRIENDS OF THE NEW FALMOUTH SENIOR CENTEROur official non-profit fund-raising organization has been meeting on a monthly basis for the last three months. The group, with the following key members: Bruce MacKilligan, President, Patricia Mello, Vice President, Willard Weaner, Secretary/Treasurer and Maria Sullivan, Financial consultant, has funded with funds already in place a space needs study which will give us data detailing the space needs for our ever-increasing senior population. It was determined at our most recent Friends meeting that two separate committees would be set up to discuss membership issues and also address an official town-wide gala to initiate for our community the prospect of enrolling all our citizens, senior and others, in the Friends group. A reminder to all that the Friends meetings are held on the last Tuesday evening of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Senior Center (coffee and goodies available). All are invited. TODAY'S CHILDREN ARE TOMORROW'S FUTURE, AND TODAY'S CHILDREN NEED YOU.VIPS is a positive way to become involved in the education of Falmouth’s young people. A college degree is not a necessity. Through the years adult volunteers have gained that extra wisdom, patience and enthusiasm that comes with experience. You will feel fulfilled, needed and involved. You can help students either directly or indirectly by being a positive role model. Volunteers help students with reading, math and science in school libraries, cafeterias, computer labs, and with a myriad of other task.s VIPS is also recruiting volunteer mentors for Project RISE - a program for young students who haven't adjusted either socially or academically for the Falmouth High School Mentor Program for 8th grade and freshman students to help them transition into the high school and for Project INQUIRE - a program for elementary school students who are more academically motivated. Training will be provided. Being a volunteer can mean a commitment of only one hour a week, depending on your schedule. To be a volunteer, it is not necessary to work with students or people if you so choose. Possibly you are better at answering the phone, photocopying, setting up a new filing system, stuffing envelopes. The behind-the-scenes work is not always “glamorous,” but these are usually the most important tasks to be done. If you cannot attend the Coffee Hour on September 18th but are interested in becoming a member of VIPS, please call us at 508-548-1621. INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY?The Frank J. Manning Certificate Program in Gerontology at the University of Massachusetts Boston is a unique educational experience. It was created to prepare professionals to respond to the needs of the growing numbers of older people in our society. The program has sought to involve older people themselves in the study of aging. This is usually a two-semester program and tuition and most fees are waived for Massachusetts residents 60 years old and older. Students learn to be advocates for the elderly and to conduct research concerning the quality of life for elders. Classes meet one day a week, either Wednesday or Thursday, at UMass Boston. In addition, for the fall 2003 semester, an evening section will be offered from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. Applications are now being accepted for consideration for the fall 2003 semester and will be accepted on a space available basis. For an application call 617-287-7330 or write to: Manning Certificate Program, Gerontology, University of Massachusetts Boston, 100 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125-3393. Remember: You're never too old to learn! INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICYIf the Falmouth Schools close due to inclement weather, then the Senior Center will also close. There will be no activities or programs nor will there be bus/van service available. Although the Senior Center is closed, the office will remain open with a skeleton staff to respond to emergency calls. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts Informational Table On August 25th from 2:30 to 3:30, a representative from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts will be present to answer questions regarding Medicare and Medex. Both members and those who wish to learn more about Medex are welcome. PEDICARE PROBLEMThere seems to be a communication problem in the booking of appointments. It has been the policy of the group that offers and oversees this service that the seniors who wish to use this very beneficial service do so by just signing on and then they are assigned a nurse. Usually no preference is made except as far as time is concerned and we wish to REEMPHASIZE this for all our seniors. We realize that some seniors have been coming to a particular nurse for quite some time and it has been allowed here at the Center. Please understand that this is not the way the Nurses’ Group would like it to happen. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. FREE VISION AND GLAUCOMA SCREENINGSThe physicians and staff of Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (OCB) are offering free screenings for any senior on Thursday afternoon, August 21, 2003 from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. There will be two technicians available on that day. It will be offered at the same time our regular blood pressure screenings are held. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETYHere are some important things women should talk to their doctors about:
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering, and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 17 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States. For more lifesaving information, contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit SENIOR ALERTA good idea for seniors when shopping where they have carts - take the safety straps for children and wrap them through your pocketbook straps making sure you clip the straps in just as you would a child, thus creating a safe way to shop without having someone taking off with your purse while you are enjoying shopping. CANADIAN PRESCRIPTIONSSeniors who are not insured for their prescriptions have been signing up to access the lower prices that are the reward for ordering in Canada. Now there are two options for seniors - one is the on-line ordering beginning here at the Senior Center - the other option, if you wish to do it on your own, just stop by the center and pick up a patient registration form that is mailed to the company. R.N. VOLUNTEERElaine Enright, RN Clinical Coordinator at Falmouth Hospital will be available on Wednesdays from 3:30 until 4:00 p.m. at the Center as part of her advanced education. Elaine will be available to take blood pressures, answer questions and give information on various topics including nutrition, disease prevention, health promotion and specific diseases. She is also willing to review medications and their side effects with you if you bring your medications to the Center. VOLUNTEERS - JML CARE CENTERJML Care Center's Adult Day Program is seeking volunteers 2 hours a week, 9:00 to 11:00 am., to play cards and board games with our clients. Free lunch, wonderful folks, - hope to hear from you soon. Please call Bobbee or Liz at 508-457-4621 ext 226. SENIOR CENTER COUNSELINGSENIOR CENTER COUNSELING - The later years of our life often bring changes that can be overwhelming and extremely stressful. These experiences can trigger feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear and depression. When we are not doing well emotionally, our physical health can also suffer. During these difficult times, talking to a professional can be very beneficial. Kathy Mohler-Faria, a Clinical Social Worker with Falmouth Human Services will volunteer here services at the Senior Center. Kathy has a Master's degree in Clinical Social Work and 14 years post-graduate experience in the counseling field. She will be available on Wednesday mornings from (9:30 to 11:00) for personal counseling. For an appointment, please call 540-0196. MASSAGE FOR SENIORSDee Engley continues to be at the Senior Center two Wednesdays a month with her chair for seated massage. Seated Massage is simple and fun. You sit in a specially designed chair. There are no oils and you are fully clothed. Usually the therapist works on the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms, and hands. It reduces muscle tension; calms the nervous system and leaves you relaxed and rejuvenated. Please call the Senior Center to schedule a time (508-540-0196). Dee also offers senior discounts for table massage at her office on Main Street. Call her at 508-495-9911 for information and appointments. DEPRESSIONDEPRESSION - Not least among the many myths surrounding old age is the myth that depression is common to the aging process. Depression is a disease that can strike young and old; it is not a normal state of being and can and should be addressed with therapy and/or medication. Recognizing that the "golden years" may not be golden for many, yet there is every reason to believe that they can be. The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc. would like senior citizens to be aware that they are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to anyone who is feeling lonely or going through a crisis. They do not counsel or advise, just lend a friendly ear to people who need someone objective to talk to. Their service is free and completely confidential. Page LEGAL and FINANCIAL AssistanceSENIOR CENTER LEGAL ASSISTANCEWe are very fortunate and obviously very happy to have five attorneys visit the Center on a monthly basis. The attorneys and the fields that each would feel most qualified to assist seniors, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, they are: *Patricia J. Mello/Janet Simons, Wednesday AUGUST 6 - 9:00-11:30 - wills, health care choices, nursing home/Medicaid planning, estate planning, asset protection, guardianships. *Thomas Kosman - Monday AUGUST 25 - 1:00 - 3:30 - housing problems, government benefits, health law, guardianship, reverse mortgage, consumer issues. *Michael Lavender - Friday, AUGUST 8 - 9:30 - 12:30 - for general legal problems, trust, wills, estate planning, etc. *Joseph Sattler, Jr. - NO APPOINTMENTS THIS MONTH - probate, wills, trust, Medicaid and Long Term Care Planning, etc. Check his web page at www.lawyers.com/sattlerlaw/*Carol Kenney - Tuesday, AUGUST 12 - 9:00 - 11:30 - probate, trusts, estate planning, wills, guardianship, health care proxy, and Estate Administration, etc. Please try to consider the urgent questions that you have and try to choose the appropriate attorney. The Senior Center wishes to thank Legal Services for Cape Cod and the Islands and the attorneys for their dedication to the elderly of our area. * The Falmouth Senior Center offers many legal, financial recreational, medical screenings or other services and/or activities by volunteer or nominal costs practitioners. Seniors participating in these services/activities do so with the understanding that the Falmouth Senior Center, the Falmouth Council on Aging, the Town of Falmouth or its long term care insurance information employees do not assume any legal or other responsibility for any advice or services rendered by such volunteer or nominal cost practitioners. WARNING ABOUT NEW SCAM TARGETING SENIORSAt the lunch given by Sheriff Jim Cummings and held on June 8 for Senior Corps volunteers serving at the jail, BCSO Senior Liaison David Vieira shared information just received from the AG’s office regarding a new scam targeting seniors. It is so outrageous we wanted to share it with you. Don"t ever Dial 809, 284, or 876 area codes! Don"t respond to e-mails, phone calls or web pages that tell you to call one of these area codes to receive information about a family member who has been taken ill, to tell you someone has been arrested or has died, or to let you know you have won a dream vacation. In each case you are told to call the number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls. If you call from the U.S., you will be charged $2,425 per minute. You may get a recorded message which goes on and on so as to ring up the charges. One caller ended up with a $24,000 phone bill. This scam is spreading quickly! These area codes can be used as a “pay-per-call” number, similar to 900 numbers in the U.S. Since 809 is not in the U.S., it is not covered by U.S. regulations on 900 numbers. AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAMLONG TERM CARE INSURANCEWith the average cost of semi-private nursing home care hovering around $68,000 per year here on the Cape, it is essential to learn what we can do to protect ourselves. Medicare and Medicare Supplements or a Medicare HMO pays very little toward the cost of these services. Long-term Care Insurance is available to help cover the cost of nursing home and home-care services, but how does it work? Elizabeth Dubuque is available on the third of each month from 1:30 to 3:30 to help you explore the options and help you determine if coverage is recommended in your situation. Call the Center at 540-0196 for an appointment. TAX & FINANCIAL PLANNING"What should I do now?" This is one of the most common questions I hear. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to the question. That's why I believe it is so important to have a plan. A well thought out financial plan can help guide you through the bumps in the road ahead. If you have questions regarding your financial situation, please call the Senior Center to make an appointment. Todd A. Drummey, Certified Financial Planner is available the second Wednesday of each month from 2:00 to 4:00. FHA REVERSE MORTGAGES AVAILABLE TO SENIORSREVERSE MORTGAGE FOR EXTRA INCOME - If you are a homeowner, the Federal Housing Administration offers a safe way to gain tax-free income. You borrow against a portion of your home's value, but you never have to make payments of any kind as long as you make the home your primary residence. You continue to own your home. Use the money to pay off your mortgage, for home repairs, in-home care, daily expenses, paying off a mortgage or credit card debt, or anything else that helps you live better and stay in your own home. If interested, please call Kathy Barrett at 508-457-1484. ELDER HOMEOWNER ADVOCACY - We are all aware of the drastic changes in the real estate market, but just how much it has changed is not always clear. If you are planning to sell your property or are approached by someone wishing to buy it, it is necessary to obtain some sound advice on exactly what the property is worth. Recently two incidents have been called to my attention, both involving senior citizens. In the first case a couple decided to put their house on the market. The real estate agent consulted quoted a very low value. They, fortunately, were advised to get another estimate and were able to sell their house for considerably more money. In the second case a senior was approached by someone offering to buy the house at a figure far below even the assessed value. I am deeply concerned for our seniors after hearing about these cases and wish to ensure that seniors find out the "fair market value" of their property. For most of us our home is our most important asset. The Council on Aging has contacted several real estate agents in the community who have agreed to act as consultants - not for sales - ensuring that any senior who is approached or is contacted about the sale of their home will be aware of the fair market value for their real estate. If any senior has need of this advocacy service, please call the Senior Center (508- 540-0196) to speak with Kathy Barrett, our Outreach Coordinator or to me and discuss your concerns or need. SOME OTHER OUTREACH PROGRAMSThe Citizens Energy Oil Heat Program can help working-poor, elderly, and low- income households by allowing them to purchase a one-time delivery of up to 175 gallons of heating oil for one-half of the state-wide average retail price. This program is available to both households that qualify for help through the federally-funded Fuel Assistance Program and that have exhausted their benefit, as well as those households that are over income for the Fuel Assistance Program but still struggling financially. Fuel Assistance Applications for the Federal Fuel Assistance Program are now being processed at the Senior Center. Trained volunteers will assist seniors in filling out the forms. Financial eligibility is based on total gross annual income for all household members. The maximum income for a household with one person is $17,180 and for a household of two is $23,220. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 457-1484. If your heat is included in your rent and you're paying 30% or more of your income toward rent you are eligible to apply for fuel assistance.
MINOR HOME REPAIR AND CHORE SERVICE PROGRAMOur Outreach Program has developed Minor Home Repair and Chore Service Program for senior homeowners. It is designed to help seniors with very minor repairs and chores such as fixing a leaky faucet, hanging pictures, changing ceiling light bulbs, etc. This does not include yard work or house cleaning. Volunteers will perform the work. Seniors who need help with a small household repair or chore and who do not have a friend or family to assist them, can call Kathy at 457-1484. RESPITE CARE FOR CARE GIVERSRESPITE CARE FOR CARE GIVERS - The Senior Center Outreach Program is offering respite care to families with an elderly relative who cannot be alone when the caregiver has to be away from the home. A trained respite worker will sit with the family member while the care giver runs errands, goes to the doctor's office or just needs time alone. Due to the reorganization of the S.H.I.N.E. program, funds once used to maintain services for the Regional Cape & Islands Program have been significantly cut for the new fiscal year. In order to keep training programs current and on going, fund-raising efforts must begin today! S.H.I.NE. has saved consumers thousands of dollars over the past years and while the counseling service is free of charge and done largely by volunteers, the regional training and program costs, are not. In addition to some state funds, additional monies must now be generated through the support of those who most readily know the S.H.I.N.E. program. Now we must ask for your help! Whether a donation is for $2.00 or $25.00, any financial assistance given by neighboring individuals, supportive Councils or FRIENDS groups will be gratefully accepted and go directly into the Cape & Islands Regional S.H.I.N.E. Program. Donations may be mailed to the Cape & Island S.H.I.N.E. Program c/o The Chatham Senior Center, 193 Stony Hill Road, Chatham, MA. 02633.
